ChatGPT & Writing

How ChatGPT Changed My View
on Academic Writing

This article has given me a new perspective on AI-assisted writing. Before reading it, I thought ChatGPT was just a tool for checking grammar and helping with ideas. I saw it as something that could make writing a little easier, but I didn’t think much about its larger impact. However, after reading the article, I realized that AI can do much more, especially in helping non-native English speakers express their ideas clearly in academic writing. The article explains how many researchers struggle with publishing their work in English because it is not their first language. ChatGPT can help by improving their grammar and clarity, making academic publishing more accessible to everyone. This made me appreciate AI in a way I hadn’t before.

At the same time, the article also made me more aware of the ethical concerns surrounding AI use in writing. While ChatGPT can be a great tool for improving writing, relying too much on it can be problematic. The article explains that if students or researchers use AI to generate entire papers without adding their own ideas, it could lead to plagiarism and a lack of original thought. This was something I had not considered before. The article introduces a human-AI writing continuum, which helped me understand which uses of AI are acceptable and which are not. For example, using AI for grammar checks, sentence rewording, or structuring ideas is generally fine. However, submitting AI-generated text as one’s own work crosses the line into academic dishonesty. This made me think more carefully about the right way to use AI in my own academic writing.

Another important part of the article discusses is the limitations of AI-generated writing. ChatGPT may produce text that sounds fluent, but it does not always provide accurate information. The article mentions that ChatGPT can sometimes create “AI hallucinations,” where it generates incorrect or misleading content. This means that students and researchers cannot rely on AI alone and must still check the sources. Another issue is that AI does not always cite sources properly, which can be a problem when writing academic papers. These reminded me that AI should be used as a tool, not as a replacement for human thinking and research.

Overall, I believe ChatGPT is a helpful tool, but only when used ethically and thoughtfully. It can support brainstorming, improve writing clarity, and provide feedback on sentence structure. However, it should not replace critical thinking or independent writing. This article has helped me understand that the key to using AI in academic writing is balance. AI can be used to enhance writing, but it should not be used to replace human effort. By using AI wisely, I believe students and researchers can benefit from it while still maintaining academic integrity.
